Mr. Scott has been practicing labor law since the mid-1970s. He has handled hundreds of labor contract negotiations, arbitrations, unfair labor practice, including State Employment Relations Board and NLRB proceedings, and civil rights tigations, employee discipline and discharge cases, student discipline disputes, special education disputes, and related litigation. He has also handled OSHA matters and issues involving termination of operations.
Mr. Scott received his bachelor's degree in 1973 and his juris doctorate
in 1976, both from the University of Illinois, where he was Editor-in-Chief
of the Illinois Law Review and graduated first in his law school class.
He served as judicial clerk for Circuit Judge Walter Gewin of the U.S. Court
of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in New Orleans in 1976-77. He formerly
coordinated the employment law practice at Squire, Sanders & Dempsey in
Columbus, and is now Managing Partner of our Firm. He is a member of the
Ohio State Bar Association, its Labor Law Committee, and the Columbus Bar
Association. He is a Founding Partner for the firm.
Mr. Scriven has been representing employers since the mid-1970s. He has had primary responsibility for hundreds of labor negotiations and grievance arbitrations, roughly one-third of which have been for private sector employers. He has also handled numerous administrative proceedings, such as National Labor Relations Board and State Employment Relations Board proceedings as well as equal employment opportunity claims. Unions with which he has bargained include the Teamsters, Operating Engineers, Machinists, Steelworkers, Auto Workers, Electrical Workers, Glass Molders and Potterers, Ohio Education Association, and Ohio Association of Public School Employees. He also handles school territorial transfer cases.
Mr. Scriven is a 1969 summa cum laude graduate of Andrews University. He
received his juris doctorate with honors at The Tulane University School
of Law in 1974, where he was an articles editor of the Tulane Law Review.
His practice is devoted to labor relations in the public and private sectors.
He is a Founding Partner for the firm.
Mr. Wahoff's primary focus is health and safety law, including workers' compensation, OSHA, Ohio VSSR, and intentional tort litigation defense. He has vigorously represented employers at several thousand administrative hearings, in numerous court cases, including jury trials, and mandamus actions. He also has significant experience representing employers in labor negotiations and federal and state court employment litigation. He has been an active participant in the American Bar Association Section on Labor and Employment Law, particularly the Occupational Safety and Health Committee.
Mr. Wahoff graduated cum laude from Miami University in 1978 with departmental
honors. He received his juris doctorate with honors from The Ohio State
University in 1982, where he was Issue Planning Editor for The Ohio State
Law Journal and received Moot Court and American Jurisprudence awards. His
professional memberships include the Columbus, Cincinnati, Ohio and American
Bar Associations, the Ohio State Bar Association, Workers' Compensation
Committee and the Workers' Compensation Committees of the Columbus and Cincinnati
Bar Associations. He is a member of the Defense Research Institute. He is
a drafter of intentional tort reform legislation. He is a frequent speaker
at educational functions for employers and a spokesperson for employers'
rights. He is an Ohio Board-Certified Workers' Compensation Specialist and
a Founding Partner for the firm.
Mr. Cowans' practice has been devoted to counseling and representing employers in all areas of labor law. His primary area of practice is employment health and safety law including workers' compensation, Ohio VSSR and OSHA. He has handled collective bargaining negotiations and arbitrations in both the public and private sector and regularly counsels employers on employment discrimination, personnel matters, and general labor issues.
Mr. Cowans is a 1985 graduate of Ohio Dominican College where he received
a bachelor's degree summa cum laude, graduating first in his class. He received
his juris doctorate with honors in 1988 from The Ohio State University where
he was a member of The Ohio State Law Journal. He has spoken to numerous
groups on a variety of labor law topics including employee health and safety,
workers' compensation, and sexual harassment. He recently co-authored an
article entitled "Prevent Personnel Problems" for the magazine Unique Opportunities.
He is a member of the Ohio and Columbus Bar Associations serving on the
Labor and Workers' Compensation Law Committees. He is an Ohio Board-Certified
Workers' Compensation Specialist. He was elected partner January 1, 1997.
Mr. Stucko's practice has focused exclusively on the representation of employers in labor and employment law. He is admitted to practice in Ohio and Illinois. He has extensive experience negotiating collective bargaining agreements, handling grievance and arbitrations, plant closing-WARN Act issues, and representing employers in administrative proceedings before the National Labor Relations Board, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, numerous state civil rights agencies, the Ohio State Employment Relations Board and the State Personnel Board of Review. Mr. Stucko has significant experience handling union organizing campaigns, discrimination suits, and other labor matters for large national employers. Mr. Stucko speaks regularly on labor and employment law issues before various groups throughout the country and has published several articles pertaining to labor issues.
Mr. Stucko is a 1985 graduate with honors from Denison University and a
1988 graduate of the University of Notre Dame Law School. He is a member
of the Ohio State Bar Association and its Labor Law Committee and the Columbus
Bar Association and its Labor Law Committee. He was elected partner January
1, 1997.
Mr. Goldberg's primary focus is occupational safety and health. He has focused his practice on defending employers against workers' compensation claims. He has defended private employers against handicap, race and sexual discrimination suits in state and federal courts. He has also spoken before numerous groups on employment health and safety issues.
Mr. Goldberg received his bachelor's degree from Rutgers University in
1980, and his juris doctorate from The Ohio State University in 1983. He
is a member of the Ohio State Bar Association, the Columbus Bar Association
and their respective Workers' Compensation Law Committees. He is an Ohio
Board-Certified Workers' Compensation Specialist. He was elected partner
January 1, 1999.
Ms. Martin's practice has been devoted to representing employers on labor and employment law issues and school districts on education law issues. She has represented both private and public sector employers in proceedings before administrative agencies such as the State Employees Relations Board, Ohio Civil Rights Commission and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Ms. Martin has also handled discrimination and wrongful discharge suits in state and federal court. She has negotiated collective bargaining agreements as well as handled grievances and arbitrations. In the education law area, a major area of emphasis is special education, where Ms. Martin has handled numerous due process proceedings at the administrative level through court appeals. Ms. Martin also represents and counsels school districts on other student issues such as discipline, sex harassment, First Amendment and privacy. She is co-author of Legal Aspects of Student Discipline in Ohio, published by the Ohio School Boards Association and contributing author to A Principal's Legal Handbook, published by the Education Law Association.
Ms. Martin received her bachelor's degree, summa cum laude, from The Ohio
State University in 1987, and her juris doctorate, cum laude, from Harvard
Law School in 1991. Her professional memberships include the Ohio State Bar
Association, the Columbus Bar Association and its Labor Law Committee, the
National and Ohio Councils of School Board Attorneys. She was elected
partner January 1, 1999.
Mr. Howenstein is a 1991 graduate of The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law.
He began his career as a trial attorney for the Ohio Attorney General Workers’ Compensation
Section. He has tried a significant number of jury cases to verdict on behalf
of the State Insurance Fund.
Since that experience, he has been in private practice
representing employers in workers’ compensation and other litigation matters.
Ms. Soards' practice has been devoted to workers' compensation law. She
graduated cum laude in 1991 from Ohio University with honors in English
and Social Sciences. In 1997, she graduated from Capital University Law
School, receiving special recognition in the area of Comparative Law. She
has ten years of workers' compensations experience, having been previously
employed as a third party claims adjuster and a legal assistant with a large
defense firm. Ms. Soards is a member of the Ohio State and Columbus Bar
Associates. She has represented employers in numerous administrative hearings.
Ms. Taylor received her B.A. from Miami University in 1991, majoring in Political Science and Diplomacy and Foreign Affairs. She attended the University of Akron School of Law and received her Juris Doctorate in 1995. While attending the University of Akron School of Law, she clerked for Judge Judith Nicely with the Summit County Court of Common Pleas and for Honorable Judge Leroy Contie with the Sixth District Court of Appeals. She was a member of the Moot Court Team and competed on behalf of the University of Akron School of Law. Ms. Taylor worked for Patrick Gannon, Member of the Industrial Commission, where she provided legal support to Patrick Gannon and the Commission on workers' compensation law matters.
Ms. Taylor has devoted her practice to representation of employers in workers'
compensation. She has attended thousands of administrative hearings as both
an advocate and advisor to decision makers.
Ms. Cain’s practice has been devoted to workers’ compensation law.
She received her B.A. from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1997.
She attended Capital University Law School and received her Juris Doctorate in 2000.
Prior to joining our firm, Ms. Cain was employed as a third party workers’ compensation claim adjuster.
Ms. Cain is a member of the Ohio State and Columbus Bar Associations.
Ms. Davis is a 2003 honors graduate of The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law.
She is a promising younger associate devoted to labor and labor litigation matters.
She has had the opportunity to speak on several occasions to employer groups.
She is admitted to practice in the U.S. District Court, Southern District of Ohio.
Jennifer Stiff’s practice focuses on school law and general employment law matters, including, public records and meetings, ethics, and special education issues.
Ms. Stiff graduated from Bowling Green State University in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a Specialization in Business-Law. She received her juris doctorate, magna cum laude, from the University of Toledo in 2006. While at Toledo, Ms. Stiff was a Note and Comment Editor for The University of Toledo Law Review.
Pat Schmitz has represented school boards and other public sector and non-profit entities for 15 years. His practice has included labor and employment matters and special education issues. He has negotiated numerous labor contracts and handled dozens of arbitrations, proceedings before administrative agencies, employee discipline and discharge cases and student discipline matters.
Mr. Schmitz is a 1988 graduate of the College of Wooster (with honors) and a 1991 graduate of the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. He assisted hundreds of school officials throughout the state as legal counsel to the Ohio School Boards Association for six years and has written and spoken frequently on school legal issues.
